I spent New Year's Eve on a cruise to the Western Carribean recently. Besides fun and relaxation with the fam, I was on the lookout for bougainvilleas. To my surprise I didn't really see as many I would have liked. There were just a few at the Holiday Inn Resort in Galveston, Texas.
The cruise was exactly what I needed and I'm back from vacation thinking about what's next for my bougainvilleas in January. This month I'm pruning the larger bougainvilleas and beginning the process of propagation. Since some of my plants are maturing, this season my cuttings will be thicker in diameter than usual. I hope this makes for more successful propagation in 2026.

Can Bougainvillea Grow in Texas?
Yes! I've seen many Bougainvilleas growing in South Texas. Below is a huge one behind a restaurant. Bougainvilleas seem to do very well in South Texas. They come back year after year if their roots are not damaged during one of the winter freezes. I enjoy watching the plants at the mission church get cut back in the winter and then come back to a huge display of colorful bracts in the spring.
